Summary: A good product design that failed to execute

Sony, we love and hate them. They come with stylish design and many features over the competition, then decides to do some priorietary technology that do not play well with the masses to block. In an ideal world I would have a reader that is sexy and all formats, and HTML with all the different encodings. For me this is the main form of them all, because the richest source obtained the information from HTML pages. This device is not HTML directly, but he claims he can do PDF, so I settled for that.

However, after the initial excitement of reading standard conversion of several books and online content, I found it very cumbersome to operate. Yes, there are several free programs that do all kinds of format conversions, but none had worked well so far. I read a lot of Chinese text and to convert an HTML-based Chinese text in PDF, or ePub BBEB or is extremely slow to load and read. It is the text in order, but will in minutes and turn to a page will increase to take good advantage to 30 seconds. I tried different techniques and none worked well enough to make me believe this is a mature product.

Also content in English are slow, if it has photos. I have some free distribution of documents to be professionally distributed, and it is still not acceptable. If it takes me 20 seconds to read through a page, I do not want to spend up to 30 seconds to make a page. It really runs on the essentials. A specialized product like this has to do what it should do very well, otherwise with netbooks today for $ 200 - $ 300 I do not see the need for a dedicated reader in general.

ps I must admit that perhaps buy Sony's strategy for people to its online content is funnel, and maybe their content is optimized to be used for this viewer. But then we have all suffered from the Betamax and MiniDisc and Memory Stick and blah blah blah. Even a product as successful as generic iPod supports MP3s, and it remains the most popular music format, so I for the day Sony sees the same light of hope.

Summary: A Great Reader
The Sony Reader Digital Pocket Edition does exactly what it is supposed to. It is easy to use and has a two-week battery life. The two weeks of "constants" reading. I have never any of the other digital reader so I can not compare, but it has certainly met all my expectations.

Summary: Addicted ... Love My Sony Pocket e-Reader.
I wanted a cheap, simple, no frills e-book reader. The Pocket Sony PRS-300 is ideal for my needs. I have for more than six hours reading without eye strain. Can not say the same for reading e-books on my laptop. I use the medium of text setting. The reader pocket size is perfect, not too large, light and easy to hold in one hand. I prefer the free "Caliber" software program to manage my e-books. I needed a touch-screen, fancy formatting, highlighting, note pad, or wireless why pay for these extras. I take my bag Sony e-reader around with me, so I've always read a book. The pink case is attractive as well.

Summary: Best gift ever
I have one for Christmas because I love reading and I travel a lot. Books can take a dispute and save. The Sony Reader PRS-300 is just perfect. It is small enough that you only keep a hand to it, but it has a screen big enough that you have a good amount before he can read a page flip. I'm storing all my books there and I wear my readers in my handbag. I use the free coverage that came with it (I bought them through the Sony website), which is sufficient to protect them. The battery life is amazing, I had only one charge since Christmas and I have used it extensively (took 22 hours round trip and only she turned to go to the toilet, and I still had 2 bar / 4! ). In addition, the screen feels like a book page and does not hurt, my eyes work at all like a computer. I thought I would read books still on, because I keep it attached to the object itself, but I got used to the reader, and I do not miss mirrors "real" on all sides. This reader has no radio or really anything fancy like that, but honestly, if you just want to use to read it and do not work on PDF files, not more than something that has the PRS-300.

Summary: Decent simple book reader
I have had the PCR-300 for a few weeks. I have little experience with other readers. So to a certain extent, this is a review of the concept as well as the Sony eReader in particular.

I do a lot of web research and in fact took Sony for a few reasons:
- It is) cheap ($ 179/free shipping.
- It supports ePub (supports what my local library - Greater Phoenix Digital Library), and are increasingly becoming the standard is.
- It is more than any other pocket-size (it is actually) fit into my jeans pockets.

So, what I've discovered so far?

Positives:
- Easy to read in bed (laptop is too cumbersome and too small for a handheld) - and I like E-Ink.
- Light and easy to wear.
- Relatively simple once learned (two or three days to find the tricks).
- To lend support for ePub - Free "books in many libraries.

Negatives:
- Slow - grows more so than many others - not a huge problem for smaller / plain books, but is worse than the book size.
- Limited benefit in reading PDF.
- Want to only 3 text sizes can often me something between M and L (I'm older and wear bifocals too).
- Book purchase process is harder than Kindle / Nook. I'm a techie, so do not care.
- At present the three dominant DRM-protected formats, ePub is currently
the least content, Sony does not support mobility or eReader / PDB, at least not with DRM.

What does it really well:
- Read books regularly, mainly of text.
- Read my e Bible at home, where I'm not jumping around.
- Read books from my local library - and there are quite a few here in Phoenix
- Avoid end up with huge amounts of pounds over a house!

What is it not best used for:
- Reading technical books and PDF files with tables or drawings.
- How to use a Bible in the church when the priest goes to several sections (too slow to navigate).
- Technophobe. It is you - you want the Nook or Kindle for their wireless process.

Who should buy it:
- Frequent Flyer as well as all other readers, but easier to carry
- People who read a lot, but want a smaller reader
- Technophiles. It is you - you can play to your heart and the Caliber is your friend

Summary: Great as a clutch piece
My main e-reader, Kindle 2 is mine. I bought the Sony Pocket Reader, because the two libraries I have a wonderful selection of Adobe Digital Editions ePUB and PDF books to borrow and I can not access it have heard with my Kindle. Once registered, the reader using the Adobe ID, it is easy to download e-books borrowed from the library and there is a small day along with the book title for you, how many remaining days to remind you read the book. The Sony Reader Library Mac / PC application even lets me pound the top back, so I usually pound to check for the maximum time for the event and then I return them early.

The PRS300 the screen contrast is much better than my Kindle 2, and even a little better than my Kindle 1, is still in use. Since the contrast is so crisp, I can comfortably read on the Sony with a smaller font size than I use on the Kindle, which is good, because the screen is smaller.

Finding a good PDF reflow font is iffy (ePUB is quite OK). There are three sizes of text - Small, Medium and Large. With PDF-S is the original text size, and usually not readable at 5 "screen. M and L reflow the text, but font sizes to distinguish between horizontal and vertical rotation. Well, actually there are 5 text sizes. When you read a PDF , the fonts are often available:
1. Too darn small
2. Almost big enough
3. A bit too big
4. Huge
5. Bigger than the "E" at the top of the eye-chart

(Horizontal is a comfortable hold and the only way I can pass to the reader a farm with my small hands / short fingers), but the size is not always good, so I have to go back to vertical. Even in horizontal mode PDFs will often repeat lines between the pages (bottom of the page, the beginning of the next). It always breaks my reading, rhythm, and why I always try to get a ePUB instead of the PDF version when it becomes available.

The reader is very simple, it has no Whiz-bang features. You can read, you can bookmark, you can change the font size and alignment, you can skip a page number, you can delete a book or just his bookmark. That's pretty much it.

Although it does not come with a charger, it takes with a decent foam padded cover, it was finally a nice surprise. In fact, I would not have ordered a case when I saw the included the first (with some minor modifications to stiffen the front to protect the screen and to avoid that would be the readers of sliding doors from the top, the perfect slip case be).

Overall, I like the Sony Pocket Edition, which, despite its shortcomings. I wish it would seek, dictionary look-up highlighted, and, but I can live without her in my secondary readers. It has the feeling of high quality construction, and the screen clarity is amazing.

Summary: great device, but not all the same
I bougth a PRS-505 for my mother in a very elegant red. This is a 5 star e-Book Reader. wonderful in everything. the letters are very visible, very black and easily. Then I bought another PRS-505 for me, the dark blue, but surprise, it is not the same as the first, which I bougth. It has grei letters, not black and it is difficult to see and read. few days ago I bougth the pink PRS-300, and it is not as good as the first red PRS-505.
very strange, it seems, you do not know what to get you. I can wait years to see if it's a good quality control eInk readers to buy another.

My wife just this reader. It came within a week. She loves it really! It has a great battery life, and it is really easy to use. She likes it because she can download books from our public library (main reason for raising this reader). It is easy to read their books, no problem with eye strain. She bought at an attractive price. Great basic readers!

I was back and forth trying to decide weather to buy them. So I did and OMG! I love it! My daughter, 8, and my son, the battle for the 11's it! The easy to use and the downloading pounds at the press of a button. And it does come with a small black slip jacket, not to buy you. I'm glad I bought it!

Summary: Okay, but the software needs work
I bought the unit for my wife because she just reads books and does not need advanced features such as highlighting or full text search. I have considered the Kindle, but the Sony Pocket Edition seems to be a better use of space (Kindle make a lot of volume for only a slightly larger screen). Plus, I do not think the 3G function is critical for book readers - there is enough capacity to load the device with enough reading material to make it to between synchronizations. I thought this model would be a good, cheap, easy and free way for them to read during the holidays without a cart full of luggage pulp.

The problem, as mentioned in other reviews is that the Sony software to save for getting books from the eBook, the device is unreliable. This is a real problem if you just buy a few books, you want to load the machine, and forget about the technology for a week or two. I use the synchronization software on my Mac laptop (because I will need the Laptop USB port for the eBook Reader, if we're on the road) for free. [Incidentally, this is a real pain so I tried other USB chargers, including those for my Blackberry and iPod - No Dice: If you want to charge the ebook without a computer, you seem to have to buy the travel charger Sony.]

Back to the software. The bottom line is this: I'm having trouble keeping it works. They know how to get a feel for software that you do not trust easily? This is the software. It looks nice and works well when it works. But should (in a few hours using a few minutes on the tasks that I needed to reach would have been based), I experience a series of cryptic error depends, racing CPU, etc. And these errors were difficult to re - create, which is a bad sign. I have installed and uninstalled, reinstalled, with technical support chat (to no help), tried to understand why they do not update patched not simply what they want to complete my (,, etc.) Mac. No luck. The software reminds me of shareware or software that came with $ 30 MP3 player is not - only expect what you by Sony.

So Bottom line: you can choose this simple device as a paperback successor and you can not have a problem with the software on a Mac or PC. But to know in advance that there is some risk that you are critical issues that prevent you from even simple things, and you get to spend valuable time to figure out a $ 200 device will encounter.

Summary: Perfect sized handheld eReader
My wife loves the Sony Reader Digital Pocket Edition (PRS300RC) that I recently got for them. She was with an old Palm T / X from me that they loaded with books from the library on the ground. I had switched from numerous Palm devices to a broader use of the iPhone and Kindle Bookstore for all of my ebook purchases, but my wife did not want a complicated smartphone, she would only answer the phone and read a book. At first I struggled with a device to do both, but started then to examine the possibility to take a special eBook reader.

My research is concentrated on three devices:
Amazon Kindle 2
Cool he eBook Reader
Sony Reader Pocket Edition

Although the Kindle was very convincing, I decided to go with the Sony product. The things that have the Sony Reader in the foreground (1) It is small (for portability) brought (2) It Epub capability (for loaning library), and (3) the sexy pink (my wife still smiles er). Other plus points were the comprehensive Google Books Library (more than 1 million euros) and the surprisingly well done Sony eBook Library.

Yes, there are certain restrictions in this eBook Reader, the most prominent () for my wife, the lack of a backlight for reading in bed is. Moreover, it is not very feature-driven (as) a Kindle, but also for my wife who is a plus, she would not complicated - they wanted to read it.

For me, nothing beats the simplicity of using an iPhone or Kindle Kindle from Amazon bookstore and wirelessly download a book selection will be done in seconds. But this was not an option for my wife and so far it could not be happier.

Well done Sony ... dj

Summary: so AWESOME!
I love my Sony Reader! I have not been able to put them since I got it. I have wanted an eBook reader for a few years and because of its cheap price, I could finally get one.It was much cheaper than the others out there. I was on the size, as a complete surprise. Most of the other six were with me "or larger saw, and I was not sure was gonna be big enough, but it seems just right. I also love how this can be so many other ebook formats than just those who read readeer store provides. I guess for some people it does not offer as many features as they want to offer such as direct downloads or notes, but if your just a recreational reader like me, its all you need. It also takes less than 30 seconds Put your readers download the eBook liabrary to your readers and synchronize your readers. I am very happy with my purchase and would this product to anyone who wants a quality eBook Reader Recommend to a better price.

Summary: Sony Book Reader
This point was not to my class with high school students AP. We could not buy or the required books they needed. It was the classics and some modern books that we do not get. You can not go to borders or Barnes & Noble's website and buy books for your reader.Unfortunately we had to return and buy the Nook. A little more expensive but so worth it.

Summary: Sony Pocket
I ordered the Sony Pocket Edition for my self. After searching all the e-reader out there, I felt that was what I wanted, this one best. I did not know how the design of the Kindle, and not the money for a nook. The only thing I think that this product would be better an SD card slot, his store more books. The battery life is amazing, I do not have the template and to get it back free for 2 weeks. For a simple e-reader that's perfect. I would recommend this e-reader for someone who wants a basic no frills e-reader.

Summary: The software is the problem

The reader itself is wonderful. The compact, fits in my pocket and I can read hundreds of books about him. It was wonderful, I was sooo happy. Until the Sony software has crashed. So I reinstalled, and it was back for 3 weeks before the crash again and again and again and again yes. The software is glitchy when you open the software that allows you to buy in the store, books or new books on there are so many problems made access. 1 The program is not always open. It just will not open the window is not displayed. Sometimes the reader is not recognized. But you can not just unplug the reader and plug it because it says you have to eject it, so you spend all your time to shut down the computer to the wire, so try again and it did not work again. I liked this product only for the Sony software that sux so I had there was a star for functions. Sony needs to make better software. I bought a Kindle, because I was soooo angry at Sony. Do not waste your money on this frustration, instead of buying ignite!

Summary: This thing is pretty dang cool
I love to read thick books and this thing is a godsend. It is so easy, I can only cover it in my pocket and not worry about the aching shoulders from a walk with a 900 + page book in my handbag.

It is much cheaper than the Kindle and because I do not need anything flashy (like touch screen, dictionary, notes, lighting, etc), I thought, the Sony Reader Digital Pocket probably best for my needs. I was right.

Thank you Sony.

Summary: Truly a Pocket Reader
This Sony pocket reader is the best e-reader I've owned so far. While the color is described as pink, it is more of a dark ruby-pink, very attractive color - a guy would not be weirded out by carrying one of these around. It does not have a lot of bells and whistles on it, but the best thing about it is...it just works. There's no fooling around, plug it in, charge it up, download your books and your are ready to go. The screen clarity is much better than previous gen Sony e-readers, and the battery seems to last a bit longer. It lasts up to about 7-10 days with everyday reading. You will want to charge it fully if you haven't used it in a week or so. You can read in landscape or regular. Buttons are quick to respond, you can bookmark pages, jump back and forth within a book or between books. The size is perfect for female, smaller hands, but doesn't get lost in your boyfriend's big paws either. And, it is not cutting board size, or ugly like some other e-readers out there. No, it doesn't have a touch screen or wireless downloads or a pointless mini color screen, but I don't find that I miss those things. They are readily available to buy, the selection of books you will be able to buy for this reader is expanding and you can borrow e-books for downloading from your public library. The reader software has improved a lot, is faster and makes it easy to find your books, whether you are looking for them on your computer or e-reader. Definitely worth a look and worth its price.

Summary: Worth Every Penny
I was coming out so skeptical about any kind of reader than they do. Why would someone not want to hold an actual book? Readers do not ignite as easily, etc., away, and I'm such a gadget girl, I had to investigate. The Sony Pocket Edition was the right price. It does not have bells and whistles, but I do not need wireless, store, notes, highlights. I love this Sony, because I can check out ebooks from my public library. I am not restricted to a particular file type. The Sony eBookstore is very easy to use, and I have no problems with it so far. Good selection, but I have not actually bought any books yet .....
I have had for a week, and I've read 5 or 6 books so far. The reader is so easy to use, and the "image" is fabulous. Fits in my pocket, I took it out of town for 5 days and the battery never died. I love books and I love gadgets, and I can not really say enough good things about the Sony Reader Pocket Edition. Even my father is impressed, and he buys for my mother. That's saying a lot, man. Buy one! You will love it.

Only thing I have a problem with, but they are like those who are no internal light that you have help from outside via a hook on light.Books used resonibly prices and I am slowly cleaning my huge treasure in my book room! I give this reader a high 5 Mark, if you want to read only one book.
